Southwestern Public Health reports COVID-19 variant in region

The discovery of the variant in the jurisdiction covered by Southwestern Public Health reinforces the need for the public to continue to follow public health measures aimed at curbing the virus' spread, according to Lock.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said those infected were foreign nationals who arrived from Dubai and tested positive after being administered RT-PCR tests.

Further analysis indicated the presence of protein spike mutations such as E484K as well as protein deletions seen in a variant first detected in Britain, Hisham said. Public Health Ontario has been testing about three per cent of all positive COVID-19 tests for variants.

The findings mean there are now four VUIs and four VOCs being tracked by scientists in the UK.

This includes surge testing in South Gloucestershire after cases of the Manaus variant of coronavirus were discovered.

Southwestern Public Health has confirmed two cases of COVID-19 variants in the region.

A study this week suggested that between 25% and 61% of people in Manaus who previously had Covid were susceptible to reinfection with the P1 variant. These are the first cases of a variant to be found in the region.
