The FBI on Thursday arrested former State Department aide Federico Klein, a Trump appointee who worked on the former president's 2016 campaign, on charges related to the January 6 storming of the Capitol, according to a court filing.
Klein's criminal complaint alleges that the aide "physically and verbally engaged with the officers holding the line".
Klein was seen on camera violently shoving a riot shield into an officer and inciting the crowd as it tried to storm past the police line, shouting, "We need fresh people, we need fresh people", according to the charging documents. "In doing so, KLEIN pushed the riot shield in between the doors to the Capitol, preventing officers from closing the doors".
Mr Klein was later allegedly seen "fighting the officers in the tunnel of the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol building" and was eventually pepper sprayed by police.
Klein was arrested Thursday in Virginia and faces charges including obstructing Congress and assaulting officers using a unsafe weapon. A former colleague of Klein's told Politico that Klein's work for the State Department began in the Office of Brazilian and Southern Cone Affairs, and he was later transferred to the office that handles responses to Freedom of Information Act requests.
Klein, who is also a former Trump campaign employee, did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Friday.
Cecilia Klein, a retired trade official and economist, said she and her son rarely talk politics or discuss Trump because she and her son have starkly different views.
At least five people, including a Capitol Police officer, died as a result of the violence, and two other officers killed themselves after. Numerous 300-plus people who have been charged in connection with the insurrection have described themselves as Trump supporters, while some have ties to extremist groups like the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers.
Klein also had a top-secret security clearance, according to his LinkedIn profile, and had been an active member of the Republican Party since 2008.
One of Klein's State Department coworkers helped authorities identify him, officials said.
Agents later spoke with witnesses who knew Klein, including a diplomatic security special agent, who identified the individual in the Capitol photos as Klein. A LinkedIn profile the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified as Klein's also lists a top-secret security clearance and shows that Klein has been politically active in the Republican Party since at least 2008, when he began volunteering for political campaigns.
