  • More than 20 Toronto schools being closed due to COVID-19 Report

Peel Public Health said it saw a jump in cases and the community spread of variants late last week and through the weekend.

"Due to our strong infection prevention measures, 99 per cent of students and staff have no active cases of COVID-19, however we must remain vigilant and keep our guard up in order to keep schools safe and open".

Toronto schools have been ordered to close as of Wednesday, forcing students to make the switch from in-person classes to virtual learning.

Peel's Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh made the decision alone, despite the government's previous announcement that schools would stay open during the four week provincial shut down.

Schools should be the last to close and the first to open in a pandemic situation, Adalsteinn (Steini) Brown, co-chair of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, told reporters last week.

"This closure will allow students and staff at least two weeks out of schools to break any chains of transmission and protect them from exposure", Peel Public Health said in the statement. But that may be extended if COVID-19 indicators don't improve, the regional health authority said.

"The spread of COVID-19 has never been greater in Toronto, with variants of concern increasing both the risk of transmission and the risk of serious illness or death", said the City in a news release.

The closure also affects Dufferin-Peel District Catholic School Board, Conseil Scolaire Viamonde, Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir, all private schools and all special education staff and students.

During the closure, licensed child care programs will not be permitted to offer care to children whose schools are required to be closed under the order, with the exception of emergency child care for those who qualify.

Toronto Public Health (TPH) announced the opening of another vaccine clinic on Monday but did not say it would follow in Peel's footsteps. But he thanked them for their efforts in fighting COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Minister of Education Stephen Lecce's office assured Ontarians that "schools remain safe with strong public health measures in place that have kept almost 99 per cent of schools in Ontario open". In a statement, health officials say the spring break will go ahead as planned from April 12 to 16. There are over 1,000 schools with at least one reported case and 83 are now closed as a result.
