AstraZeneca vaccine linked to rare blood clots, says EMA official

National Vaccination Committee President Maria Theodoridou advised calm ahead of the European Medicines Agency's upcoming assessment on whether the AstraZeneca vaccine is associated with the development of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia.

"We can now say, it is clear that there is a link with the vaccine", Cavaleri said in the interview. A causal link with the vaccine is not proven, but is possible and further analysis is continuing, the agency said.

Scientists are exploring several possibilities that might explain the extremely rare brain blood clots that occurred in individuals in the days and weeks after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine.
