Three medical officers of health have issued an open letter calling on the province to re-implement a stay-at-home order, close all non-essential businesses and restrict travel between regions in Ontario.

The medical officers of health for Toronto, Peel and Ottawa have written to their provincial counterpart, Dr. David Williams, to ask for another provincewide stay-at-home order to curb virus transmission, especially given the prevalence of new variants of concern.

"Given the experiences of other jurisdictions with [variants of concern] (VOCs) and the current concerning trends throughout the province, we are asking that you, as Chief Medical Officer of Health, issue a province-wide stay-at-home order", the letter says.

"Stricter lockdowns have shown to be effective in otherr countries to control transmission while vaccine campaigns progressed to achieve sufficient population coverage to suppress transmission".

There were 3,041 new infections on Saturday, and 2,938 new cases on Sunday.

Ottawa's medical officer of health has spoken out to stress the need for further pandemic restrictions, including a provincewide stay-at-home order, to stem the spread of COVID-19 and more threatening variants of the virus as pressure mounts on the health-care system.

"Both Peel and Toronto have seen rapid case growth while placed in the Grey-Lockdown category of the COVID-19 response framework, highlight the need for stronger public health measures", the doctors wrote, adding that the third wave is being driven by variants of concern (such as new strains detected in the UK, South Africa and Brazil) and that younger people are being hospitalized with more severe illness.

"The virus has changed, and so must our behaviours", Etches said.

"Our government will continue act on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health who will review the science, data and trends along with collaborating with local medical officers of health and our team of expert health officials on if and when public health measure can be loosened or strengthened".
