He died on Monday, according to his agent who released a statement on the actor's passing.

Friday Night Dinner star Paul Ritter has died of a brain tumour, aged just 55. He was 54 and had been suffering from a brain tumour.

They added: "Paul was an exceptionally talented actor playing an enormous variety of roles on stage and screen with extraordinary skill". He was fiercely intelligent, kind and very amusing.

Another echoed these sentiments, writing: "RIP Paul Ritter - loved him as Martin in Friday Night Dinner".

More recently he led the Old Vic revival of Art in 2016, and before that he played John Major in Peter Morgan's The Audience and appeared in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at the National Theatre.

Ritter was arguably best-known as the family patriarch, Martin Goodman, in Channel 4's Friday Night Dinner, opposite co-stars Tamsin Greig, Simon Bird and Tom Rosenthal. Ritter was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2006 for his performance in Coram Boy and in 2009 he was up for a Tony Award for his role in The Norman Conquests.
