  • Come Monday the UK Minister will be in a pub

Johnson said there would be no need for people to prove they had been vaccinated for the reopening of shops and pub gardens next week, adding that the idea of vaccine passports for worldwide travel was likely and its use domestically would be piloted at some big events. "We can see the waves of sickness afflicting other countries, and we've seen how this story goes".

The government of Cyprus has said they would welcome tourists from the United Kingdom starting 1 April, provided they supply a negative PCR test.

During the Downing Street briefing on 5 April, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that, after the Global Travel Taskforce reports its findings, the government will "be setting out well before 17 May what we think is reasonable".

The lateral flow tests, which are being widely used in schools, can provide results in as little as 30 minutes, with the two-tests-per-week available from 9 April. But infections and deaths both have fallen sharply during the lockdown and since the start of a vaccination campaign that so far has given a first dose to more than 31 million people, or six in 10 adults. Johnson is unlikely to tell Britons when or where they will be able to go overseas on vacation, something that is now banned by law.

Dooey also backed vaccine certification for worldwide travel, saying "the concept of certificates is a tried and tested one".

"Taking into account the latest situation with (coronavirus) variants and the evidence about the efficacy of vaccines against them, we will confirm in advance whether non-essential worldwide travel can resume on 17th May, or whether we will need to wait longer before lifting the outbound travel restriction", a government review said.

A government document released this evening also confirmed the introduction of a traffic light system - but it did not reveal which countries would be on the green, amber and red lists.

Travellers arriving from countries rated "green" will not be required to isolate although pre-departure and post-arrival tests will still be needed.

How is Israel's "vaccine passport" working?

Conservative legislator Graham Brady said vaccine passports would be "intrusive, costly and unnecessary". The leader of the opposition Labour Party, Keir Starmer, called the idea "un-British".

"I want to stress that there are complicated, ethical, and practical issues. raised by the idea of COVID status certification. using vaccination alone", Johnson told a news conference.
