But the official said the United States was waiting for its efforts to be "reciprocated" by Iran.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Friday that there was no need for direct talks until the United States rejoins the 2015 agreement.

The accord guarantees relief from economic restrictions on condition that Tehran verifiably curbs most of its nuclear programme, in light of the purported nuclear proliferation risks posed by the Islamic Republic.

US President Joe Biden hopes to returning to the 2015 agreement, which his predecessor Donald Trump trashed as he launched a "maximum pressure" campaign in hopes of bringing Tehran to its knees.

Iran met with the deal's signatories in Vienna this week. "So I think we'll have to see what happens, what happens tomorrow to get a further clue - it won't be a definitive answer probably - but a further clue into Iran's thinking".

"Questions still remained about whether the seriousness of objective - in terms of coming back into compliance that the United States showed - will be reciprocated by Iran".

Police officers stay in front of the "Grand Hotel Wien" in Vienna, Austria, April 9, 2021, where closed-door nuclear talks with Iran take place. The talks began Tuesday with Iran meeting Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation, the five other remaining signatories of the 2015 deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and those five world powers meeting separately with the US delegation nearby.

The head of Iran's delegation to the talks Abbas Araghchi stressed the need for "political will and seriousness from other parties".

The JCPOA called for Iran to freeze nuclear activities that could be weaponized in return for sanctions relief from world powers. This week, the State Department said the USA would be open to negotiations with Iran.

What are European officials saying about the talks?

The U.S. side did not present a list of specific sanctions that could be lifted, and the Iranian side did not present a list of nuclear steps it would be willing to take to reverse JCPOA violations, the official added. "They continue to target via proxies Americans in the region and our partners and allies", Bowman said.

Iran's foreign ministry said in a statement that diplomats would meet again on Wednesday in Vienna.

"The #JCPOA participants took stock of the work done by experts over the last three days and noted with satisfaction the initial progress made", Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's envoy to the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said on Twitter after the meeting formally known as the Joint Commission. Permanent Representative of Russian Federation to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said JCPOA participants "noted with satisfaction the initial progress made".
