  • Michigan Office of the Governor Gov. Gretchen Whitmer addresses the state during a speech in Lansing Mich. Friday

MI is facing the country's highest rate of coronavirus infections, and daily case numbers are beginning to increase across the Midwest.

As COVID surges across the state for a third time, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) will extend restrictions on offices for up to another six months, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced following a tour of an Ypsilanti vaccine clinic.

The White House said on Monday it was prepared to send additional therapeutic treatments to the state of MI, which is experiencing a worrying number of COVID-19 cases, but declined to promise more vaccine as the state has sought.

"We are seeing a surge in MI despite the fact that we have some of the strongest policies in place: mask mandates, capacity limits, working from home", Whitmer stated.

White House coronavirus adviser Andy Slavitt told reporters the USA government would work to ensure that states such as MI were ordering the full amount of vaccine that was available to them but said that shifting distribution was not in line with the administration's public health strategy. We are getting shots in arms.

"I think if we tried to vaccinate our way out of what is happening in MI we would be disappointed that it took so long for the vaccine to work", she said.

Alberta reports 1,351 new cases of COVID-19, active cases topple 11,000
On Wednesday, the province released COVID-19 data showing active cases in the city climbing from 110 to 124 overnight. In the Edmonton Zone , there are more active cases of variants than the previously dominant strain of COVID-19.

A White House official says President Biden did tell Whitmer that the administration would send additional government personnel to help out with the vaccination process. Only 35% of MI residents have received their first vaccine shot and 23% are fully vaccinated, though these numbers are average for the nation.

"We've had an appointment process and it's worked quite well", she said. And so it's on all of us to recognize we can squash where we're seeing hot spots. "Similarly we need that vaccine in other places".

WHITMER: Well, I think they've got a plan and they're committed to sticking to it, and I understand that. She said the state needed to "go back to basics" and shut down.

"We are seeing hospitalisations going up".

Among those hardest hit by the variant strain is MI, which has seen an alarming spread in cases in recent weeks. And that's all despite the fact that I've got a reduced set of powers because of the antagonism from my own legislature. We've asked our state for a two week pause.

Whitmer attributed her state's spike in coronavirus infections to past low infection rates, which means fewer people have antibodies, the prevalence of variants and fatigue from residents in limiting their activities.
