U.S. Centers for Disease Control Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said Monday vaccines aren't the answer to Michigan's problem.

"Really what we need to do in those situations is shut things down", CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said.

The White House said on Monday it was prepared to send additional therapeutic treatments to the state of MI, which is experiencing a worrying number of COVID-19 cases, but declined to promise more vaccine as the state has sought.

"We each have enough information to do our part", she said after touring a vaccination clinic at Eastern Michigan University. "We've asked our state for a two-week pause...despite all that we are seeing a surge of variance and that's precisely why we're really encouraging them to think about surging vaccines into the state of MI".

She said additional vaccine allocation could not have a tangible effect on quelling the surge for a few weeks. The seven-day average of daily deaths, 43, more than doubled from 20 in the same period.

Moderna vax has more side effects than Pfizer/BioNTech
Pfizer said that it planned to submit similar requests with other regulatory bodies around the globe in the coming days. That's what they were granted last year to administer the vaccine to people 16 years and older.

This came despite the Democrat governor admitting the state has some of the strictest COVID-19 measures in the country. (Michigan does not report cases on Sundays.) This brings the state to a total of 747,697 confirmed cases and 16,512 confirmed deaths.

Lockdowns have been a source of controversy in MI.

Slavitt said that Johnson & Johnson is on track to deliver around 24 million COVID-19 shots to the United States in April whether or not it receives US regulatory clearance for its Baltimore vaccine production plant, which is owned by contract manufacturer Emergent BioSciences Inc. A conservative controlled supreme court alsostruck down the governors executive orders filed at the start of the pandemic. The legislature also passed HB 1, which would restrict the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' ability to declare a state of emergency. On the other hand, more than a year into the pandemic, many MI residents and businesses have grown tired of restrictions, and some are outright defying the existing guidelines.

But White House coronavirus senior adviser Andy Slavitt said variants hitting the state are also present elsewhere.

MI is now one of 13 states that the Covid ActNow data model characterizes as "very high risk" for COVID-19. Many of those cases are concentrated in Winter 2020 and Spring 2021, as the state largely avoided the Summer 2020 surge that many other states struggled with. More than 5.5 million of the 7 million doses the state has been allocated by the federal government have been distributed. MI is one of 11 states to have distributed at least 5 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccines.
