The city was still tense as it prepared for Wright's funeral on Thursday.

Between them lay Daunte Wright, 20, a Black man shot dead by police in nearby Brooklyn Center on April 11.

Sharpton decried mentions of Wright's record and said the real questions must be reserved for Kim Potter, the 26-year veteran Brooklyn Center police officer who shot Wright with her service weapon.

Since the shooting the officer who killed Mr Wright, Kim Potter, has resigned and been charged with second-degree manslaughter. She resigned from the department. Officers in riot gear used tear gas and wooden batons in clashes with demonstrators last week.

Because Wright's death occurred during the trial of Derek Chauvin, family and activists anxious aloud that it meant little had changed since the nationwide wave of protests over Floyd's death.

His mother, Katie Wright, gently reached out to touch him, collecting a quiet moment with her son as a crowd of mourners filed into the foyer of Shiloh Temple International Ministries to pay their respects.

"They've been by Katie's side this whole time".

Also attending were the families of Oscar Grant, killed in 2009 by a California transit officer who mistook his service weapon for a stun gun, similar to the Wright case, and of Emmett Till, the teenager whose 1955 lynching in MS helped spark the civil rights movement, as well as the boyfriend of Breonna Taylor, who was shot by white Louisville, Kentucky, officers in March 2020 as they served a warrant. "I felt safe coming in here".

U.S. Representative Omar offered her condolences to the Wright family at the funeral and presented Daunte's mother Katie with the flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of her son.

"We want justice, for [Potter] to be held accountable", said Bryant's friend Christal Luellen, 40, as she stood with Bryant in the lobby of Shiloh Temple International Ministries in northern Minneapolis, where his funeral was set for noon on Thursday.

Funeral attendees were brought to their feet when artist Ange Hillz painted a portrait of Wright - white paint on a black canvas - as trumpeter Keyon Harrold played "Amazing Grace" and "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing", the Black national anthem.

Derek Chauvin Convicted in Killing of George Floyd 04.20.21
It is a landmark case for police use of force against black people, and the verdict marks a significant break with the past. Derek Chauvin, 45, was filmed kneeling on Mr Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes during his arrest last May.

"We definitely hope it stays peaceful", Luellen said.

"I feel sadness. I feel like my heart was tore out of my chest", Bryant said after viewing Wright in an open, white casket covered in red roses. "And for you to rob them of their child", Sharpton said. "We trying to get the stench of racism out of the atmosphere", said Sharpton.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, center right, and lawyer Benjamin Crump, center left, join family and community members at Wednesday's public viewing for Daunte Wright in Minneapolis.

Sharpton, who memorably eulogized George Floyd past year, delivered the eulogy, recalling someone remarking they'd not seen a funeral procession so large in Minneapolis since the death of Prince. "You brought hate into their families and we will run it out and get them justice". "We shouldn't be losing friends like this", said Malik Taylor, 24, a childhood friend of Wright's who attended the funeral with another friend, John Mayer Jones, 19, both of Minneapolis.

Wright's family did not speak publicly Wednesday, but in the past week they have signaled that they reject the police narrative that Potter shot Wright by mistake and said that she should face higher charges.

Wright's father, Aubrey Wright, nodded and applauded.

Wright was stopped for an expired tag, though authorities later learned he had an outstanding gross misdemeanor warrant, and was fatally shot in his vehicle as an officer yelled out "Taser!" "He lived for him every single day", she said.

Wright's aunt agreed. "Daunte wasn't an angel".

"God has turned the page in the state of Minnesota, and we're never going back no more", said Sharpton to applause.

"We need to shine a spotlight on all these cops".
