A 13-year-old Brampton girl who contracted COVID-19 died last week, becoming one of the youngest victims of the virus in Ontario.

On Sunday evening, Mayor Patrick Brown tweeted his condolences to the family of Emily Victoria Viegas. "It's heart-wrenching and a devastating reminder of what this virus can do".

"As a parent, I am lost for words", he said. "Horrifying", Brown said on social media. Days later she was rushed to hospital after he family found her unresponsive in her bed.

The girl's father was an essential worker at a warehouse, the mayor said.

Emily Viegas died at home on Thursday, while her mother struggles with the disease in hospital.

"Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers at this hard and unfortunate time", Goddard wrote. "This loss is tragic and our team is extremely affected by this".

Healey urged people of all ages in Ontario who experience risky symptoms associated with COVID-19, including shortness of breath, an unusual fever, chest pain or a persistent rash, to report to hospital immediately.
