A campaign to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom has obtained enough poll signatures to put the issue on the ballot, according to the office of California's secretary of state Monday.

"There's too much at stake", he added.

His campaign manager, Juan Rodriguez, repeated criticism that the campaign is a partisan effort by pro-Trump Republicans that "seeks to undo the important progress we've made under Governor Newsom - fighting COVID, supporting families who are struggling, protecting our environment, common-sense gun safety laws".

Orrin Heatlie, who led the grassroots effort to gather the signatures to recall Newsom, hailed the critical milestone by noting how many people had predicted the effort would fail when it started. Orrin Heatlie, a retired county sheriff's sergeant, chose to pursue a recall after seeing Newsom explaining the rights of immigrants living in the country illegally. "Our work is just beginning". Then potential candidates vying to replace Newsom can officially file paperwork to get into the race. The Los Angeles Times reported Monday before the certification that the recall election, likely to be held less than a year before the regularly scheduled governor's race, will cost an estimated $400 million.

Unless significant numbers of those people rescind their signatures in the next 30 days, a vote will take place, likely by November.

As of Monday, more than 1,495,709 verified voters signed the recall effort, meeting the minimum threshold to force a special recall election.

It remains unclear when the election will be held.

"This now triggers the next phase of the recall process, a 30-business-day period in which voters may submit written requests to county Registrars of Voters to remove their names from the recall petition", Secretary Weber said.

Republicans running to replace Newsom include former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and reality TV star and former Olympic decathlon champion Caitlyn Jenner, who has never run for elected office. Now that recall proponents have officially crossed the threshold to qualify, the floodgates will open for dozens of additional candidates who want to raise their profiles by running to replace Newsom.

The state's voters will be asked two questions on the recall ballot.

Leslies said I could quote her: "YES!" Recalling him will be a tough sell in the heavily Democratic state where just a quarter of the state's registered voters are Republicans, about the same number as those who identify as "no party preference".

Newsom's pandemic actions tipped the recall effort over the edge, especially after he was caught last fall dining at a fancy restaurant for a lobbyist's birthday while urging residents to stay home.
