A pink supermoon will light up the night skies over the United Kingdom this week - and peak during the early hours of Tuesday night. It will become officially full at 11:32 p.m.

A "supermoon" occurs when we have a full moon at the same time the moon is closer to the Earth on its elliptical orbit.

According to the Maine Farmer's Almanac, which lists all the names given to moons by Native Americans, it was termed the "Pink Moon" because it coincided with the blossoming of Pink Creeping Phlox.

Why is it called a supermoon?

In a NASA release, the agency explained that the term "supermoon" - first coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 - refers to either a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of perigee, also known as its closest approach to Earth.

Supermoons have become more popular over the last few decades. Depending on how you interpret this definition, in a typical year there can be two to four full supermoons in a row and two to four new supermoons in a row.

As a result of its close proximity to Earth, a super moon is bigger and brighter than an average full moon.

The full moon has other names as well, including the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and the Fish Moon.

Stargazers and astronomers will be able to spot a pink supermoon tomorrow. The name "Pink Moon" refers to the blooming of the flowering plant "moss pink" or ground phlox (Phlox subulata), one of the first spring flowers.

The partial eclipse won't begin until around 7.45pm AEST, but for an additional spectacle keep your eyes peeled at 5.40pm to see the moon on the horizon where it will look enormous.

You'll have another chance to catch the moon if you missed it.

The supermoon on May 26 will be a total lunar eclipse that will turn into a blood moon.
