New York City is planning an official reopening on July 1, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this morning on MSNBC, with Broadway gearing up for a September start. New York City has been under coronavirus-related restrictions since March 2020, when it emerged as an early epicenter of the pandemic.
According to de Blasio, come July 1, restaurants, gyms, hair salons, businesses, and arenas will all be open at 100 percent capacity. He said he hopes some smaller productions can open by July.
"What we can say with assurance is, we're giving COVID no room to run in New York City", de Blasio said.
The mayor said much of the reason for his optimism for the country's largest city being able to get back to a normal level of operating was that 6.3 million doses of vaccine have been administered in the city of some 8.3 million people.
De Blasio said the goal for Broadway theaters is still to open fully in September.
"We said a month or so ago, it was the variants versus the vaccination, what was going to win, which one was going to win the race", de Blasio noted, adding "Vaccination is winning this race ... I think people are going to flock to New York City because they want to live again".
"Our plan is to fully reopen New York City by July 1", he announced on the morning talk show.
The mayor also declared that schools will be back at "full strength" come the fall. "All of the indicators show it". We're focused on the data and the science.
