Travellers landing at Canada's worldwide airports already have to stay in a federally approved hotel for three days while awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test done on arrival.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford made conflicting statements in their respective press conferences on Friday related to COVID-19 restrictions at Canada's borders.

"Because at this time Ontario is the only province requesting this, we are happy to work more narrowly with them".

At a news conference in Toronto, Mr. Ford expressed concern about the security of Canada's borders during the pandemic. The hotel stay is part of a 14-day quarantine that can be completed at their destination if they test negative.

"If I had the power, I would close down [Toronto Pearson International Airport] immediately", Ford said.

The Ontario government wants Ottawa to impose mandatory three-day hotel quarantines at land crossings including the Blue Water Bridge.

He added that the importation of COVID-19 through the border is "extremely low" in Canada and the third wave is very much related "community transmission".

The commission has examined what went wrong in the province's response to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite that fact, Ford spent most of Friday saying that his sick leave plan offers workers up to $4,600, instead of the $600 his provincial legislation promises.

"I could point to 30 years of underinvestment from government after government", he said.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath called on Ford to release the report as soon as the government receives it, and to implement its recommendations.
