The European Commission has launched legal proceedings against the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker for not respecting its contract for the supply of COVID-19 vaccines, and for not having a "reliable" plan to ensure timely deliveries.

Sahin said that current trials for younger age groups were "very encouraging" with figures suggesting "children are very well protected by the vaccine". Several countries have recommended that the shot be given only to older people because of the potential side effect. Once the application is filed, an FDA advisory committee will publicly debate the evidence behind the shots before the agency decides whether to allow emergency use.

AstraZeneca's chief executive Soriot said it did its best to deliver as many doses as possible to the European Union, and while disappointed not to have delivered more, he was proud of the company's work and was "totally committed" to increasing supply.

Britain's medicine regulator on Thursday said there had been a further 41 reports of rare blood clots after doses of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine, but that the benefits of the shot continued to outweigh the risks for the majority of people. Balance of 7,49,960 vaccine doses are still available with the state for administration to the eligible population groups.

The White House is feeling increasingly confident about the supply of the three vaccines already being administered in the U.S. - Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.

Peter English, a specialist in communicable disease control, said the findings released on Friday confirmed "that the vaccine is not 100% effective" and were consistent with other data showing the overall positive impact of Britain's vaccination programme. People will receive an SMS specifying the time slot during which they can visit the drive-through for their second vaccine.

AstraZeneca reported revenue of $275 million from deliveries of 68 million doses of the vaccine during the first quarter.

Despite accelerated deliveries and distribution, public health officials say it's "too early to celebrate" and vaccines will do little to help provinces now struggling to stem infections during a tough third wave of the pandemic.

Acknowledging that India is one of the biggest producers of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, the senators urged the pharma companies to share technology "such as vaccine recipes and manufacturing information, with partner companies to expedite production". AstraZeneca in turn authorizes other companies to produce the shots around the world.
