The White House has completed a review of its policy on North Korea, press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Friday, saying that while the aim of the USA remains denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the Biden administration is open to diplomatic talks to boost security for the region.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki made the announcement on Friday.

The Biden administration is not seeking a grand bargain or an all-or-nothing approach but has settled on a calibrated and practical approach to diplomacy with North Korea with the goal of eliminating the threat to the United States, the report quoted a senior administration official as saying on Thursday.

She said Washington would not "focus on achieving a grand bargain", apparently referring to the kind of dramatic over-arching deal that Donald Trump initially suggested was possible when he met with North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un.

Psaki said Biden's team consulted with outside experts and officials from "several previous administrations" to build on their lessons learned.

Countries have been eagerly petitioning the United States for shipments of vaccines as doses are snapped up by wealthier nations. However, he has repeatedly underscored that vaccines will not be sent without taking care of the American population first.

The new policy, however, also said Biden will not "rely on strategic patience", the term that defined the Obama era approach of hoping USA and United Nations sanctions would ultimately put the screws to the North Korean government.

Biden administration officials have been consulting with Trump administration officials who took part in the Singapore talks between Kim and Trump in June 2018 as well as a second meeting in February 2019.

Days later, the North fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea in a defiance of United Nations resolutions that ban such launches by North Korea. Biden was briefed on the plan last week by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the paper reported.

During the trip, Blinken sternly criticized North Korea's nuclear program and human rights record and pressed China to use its "tremendous influence" to convince the North to denuclearize.
