  • Health Canada holding off on Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine distribution

Ottawa's move follows Canadian authorities' earlier decision to alter labelling on J&J vaccine vials to point to potential dangers of "rare but serious blood clots" following U.S. regulators' ten day pause of vaccination after 15 people developed complications after taking the jab.

Denmark has said it will not use United States drugmaker Johnson & Johnson's single-shot Covid-19 vaccine in its vaccination campaign, citing concerns over serious side effects involving blood clots.

The Danish Health Authority noted that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) "has concluded that there is a possible link between rare but severe cases of blood clots" and the Johnson & Johnson drug.

Before the Health Canada advisory was issued, Saskatchewan Health Minister Paul Merriman said most of the doses that arrived in the province were to be funneled through the drive-through clinics in major centres.

Health Canada's pause on the J&J shot is a setback for the country's efforts to continue ramping up vaccinations amid a raging third wave of the pandemic.

The independent body of scientific experts declared the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine by Johnson & Johnson safe for use, saying the benefits of preventing COVID-19 infection outweigh the risk of rare blood clots.

Of those patients, 875 are being treated in intensive care units and 589 are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator. Since COVID-19 vacccines starting rolling out in Ontario, almost 4.9 million people have recieved at least one dose.

Johnson & Johnson is a single-shot vaccine, meaning a person is fully vaccinated after just one dose.

The health authority noted Denmark's epidemic was now "under control", and that "the vaccination rollout is progressing satisfactorily with other available vaccines".

In mid-April, Denmark announced it was cutting the AstraZeneca vaccine from its vaccination campaign after putting it on hold a month earlier, citing similar concerns, becoming the first country in Europe to completely cut the vaccine.

The department previously said the J&J doses Canada was expecting were not coming from the Baltimore plant. Keep reading to find out more of the latest on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, and for more on side effects, check out Moderna Caused This Reaction in 82 Percent of People, New Study Says.

In Canada there have been seven known cases of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia, or VITT, one of them fatal.
