Researchers who conducted the study stressed, however, that such side effects are extremely rare, and the benefits of the vaccine still outweigh the risks in most situations.

In a linked editorial, United Kingdom scientist Professor Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia, said the findings showed countries were wrong to pause using the Oxford jab.

Previously, advice was only for people under 30 to be offered an alternative vaccine.

Results showed 59 blood clots in the veins, compared with 30 expected, equating to 11 excess events for every 100,000 vaccinations.

A particular type of brain blood clot - cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) - was reported in 93 cases (with an average age of 47), and 149 had other major thromboembolic events (average age 55) accompanied by low blood platelet count.

Both countries have stopped using the vaccine as part of their immunisation programmes. He maintained that COVAX has assured Pakistan of providing at least 100,000 doses of mRNA vaccine of Pfizer BioNtech by June this year.

But the researchers cautioned that the risks linked to the jab should be "interpreted in the context of the benefits of Covid-19 vaccination".

Up to April 28, the MHRA had received 242 reports of blood clots accompanied by low blood platelet count in the United Kingdom, all in people who had AstraZeneca, out of around 28.5 million doses given.

Officials at the MHRA, which monitors possible side effects of the jabs, have counted 168 cases of blood clots following vaccination with the British jab in the United Kingdom so far.

Combined with future deliveries of AstraZeneca, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson shots, Fortin said there should be more than enough supply on hand for all adults and this younger cohort to get a vaccine by the nation's birthday.

The move came after AstraZeneca's vaccine experienced a drop in popularity in Germany earlier this year following reports of rare blood clots in some patients and a subsequent recommendation by national health authorities to only administer the jab to those over the age of 60. The current jabs are modelled on the Wuhan variant which is no longer dominant. Matt Hancock last week announced Number 10 had bought 60million more doses of the Pfizer jab to use for the second rollout.

A second batch of the coronavirus vaccines has been committed in June alongside "a little over 0.1 million" of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine doses, the federal government official said, adding that even Moderna's vaccine could be supplied to Pakistan through COVAX. The project will be co-ordinated from its Porton Down lab in Wiltshire.

He warned, however, the virus was still capable of spreading "like wildfire" in places where vaccine uptake was low and that officials were looking at postcode level data to spot which communities were at risk of flare-ups.
