The gap between two Covishield doses should be increased to 12 to 16 weeks from the existing 6-8 weeks, a government panel on vaccine administration has suggested. The panel did not suggest any change in the dosage interval for COVAXIN.

To date, 57% of those who have been fully vaccinated have received the vaccine from China's state-owned drugmaker Sinopharm, while 43% have received AstraZeneca shots, it said.

The recommendations of the NTAGI, which came after a recent meeting of the panel, will be sent to the National Expert Group on Vaccine Adminstration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC).

Additionally, the panel suggested that pregnant women should be offered the choice of vaccine and lactating women can be inoculated any time after delivery.

Currently, coronavirus patients, who have recovered are eligible to take the vaccines.

"Many countries follow this practice". In Canada the gap is three-four months.

Russian media report that several people have been killed and wounded in a school shooting in the city of Kazan. According to authorities, the second shooter is a 19-year-old individual, who had an officially registered gun.

Currently, the recommended interval between two doses of Covishield is four to eight weeks.

This is the second time in three months that the Covishield dosage intervals have been changed.

This study was conducted by scientists at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester who examined models of the United Kingdom and other countries that have delayed the second shot due to a shortage of vaccines. The government also asked those arriving to the islands to produce a negative Covid-19 test administered four days before their departure. "No change in interval of Covaxin vaccine doses was recommended", news agency PTI quoted government sources as saying.

Earlier today SII officials told the centre Covishield production will be increased to 10 crore doses - but only from August - and that June-July production "may also increase by some quantity".

"Based on the available real life evidence particularly from the United Kingdom, the COVID-19 working group agreed for increasing the dosing interval to 12-16 weeks between two doses of Covishield vaccine. No change in interval of Covaxin vaccine doses was recommended", the sources said. The flood of cases has brought the country's healthcare system to its knees, and stressed the need for rapid vaccination.

The national vaccination drive began on January 16 and over 17.5 crore doses have been administered so far, but vaccine coverage is still less than 2.5 per cent of the population.
