Ontario has administered 6,491,666 vaccine doses (140,785 more than Tuesday).

Conversations are heating up about the prospect of a mixed-dose vaccination regime, and whether it would be possible or even beneficial for those who received a first shot of AstraZeneca.

"I talked to my doctor just last week, he recommended that I indeed get a second dose of AstraZeneca in the coming weeks or months when it becomes available", Trudeau said in a response to a question from Conservative MP and health critic Michelle Rempel Garner during question period on Wednesday. "However, this is out of an abundance of caution, because the safety and well-being of the people of Ontario has to be our top priority".

Elliott warned the public must continue to follow public health measures.

"But that should only happen in conditions where we can ensure that it is appropriate for them to go back".

Meanwhile, Ontario passed another grim pandemic milestone on Thursday when the number of laboratory-confirmed cases of people with COVID-19 passed the 500,000 mark.

At this point, there's no suggestion that people who took AstraZeneca will get a choice of vaccines for their second dose.

"Those of you who received your first dose of AstraZeneca did the right thing to protect yourself and your loved ones, and communities", she said.

Over the last few days, there have been increased rates of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) from 0.9 per 100,000 doses to 1.7 per 100,000 doses.

"We can't rush to reopen".

Ontario's vaccine effort had been criticized initially for a slow and bumpy start.

Ontario has vaccinated 54% of eligible adults 18 and up in COVID-19 hot spots after a couple weeks of directing extra doses to areas with high rates of infection and vulnerable populations.

"We are actively working on the vaccine rollout plan for 12 to 16-year-olds with the Ministry of Education and working with our public health units as well", Elliott said Wednesday.

The province reported 2,759 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the total number of cases since January, 2020 to 502,171.

"I know there are questions being asked around the world about the data that involves mixing and matching doses, there are no recommendations around that yet, but I know scientists are leaning in carefully to see if it may be the right option for many people", said the prime minister.

The province said there are now 1,673 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario.
