  • CP NewsAlert: Mountie charged with first-degree murder in Saskatchewan

RCMP say that on May 8 at about 11:50 p.m. CST, they were informed about a possible abduction after a friend had received a concerning message from a woman on Facebook.

Cpl. Bernie Herman, a 32-year member of the RCMP, was serving with the Prince Albert RCMP Traffic Services Unit at the time of his arrest.

Police in Prince Albert, Sask. have charged an RCMP officer with first-degree murder in the death of a 26-year-old man on Tuesday evening. He also said Braden grew up in La Loche but was more recently living in Prince Albert and went to school at Carlton Comprehensive and École St. Mary.

Investigators said the alleged killing took place while the officer was off duty, but few details have been released.

Another source cited by the RIA Novosti agency said they had heard an explosion and could see smoke rising from the building. A source told the Interfax news agency that a second shooter had barred himself in on the fourth floor of the building.

His death is being investigated as a homicide and an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

The police have requested the appointment of an independent observer to oversee this investigation, which is being led by the Prince Albert Police Service Criminal Investigations Division.

"As this RCMP investigation is now considered complete, we do not anticipate further updates and do not have any other information to share", the Mounties said in a media release. RCMP asked for the public's help finding the woman and identified a man as a suspect. As a result, RCMP employees must conduct themselves in a manner that not only meets, but exceeds, the rightfully high expectations of Canadians. The Regina Police Service is to handle that investigation.
