"We must be vigilant because the threat of this virus remains real and new variants pose a potentially lethal danger, including the one first identified in India which is of increasing concern here in the United Kingdom", said Johnson.

"There are some important unknowns - this variant is more transmissible".

"If the variant is significantly more transmissible, we will face hard choices".

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday said the COVID-19 variant first detected in India was of "increasing concern" in the United Kingdom and the country's health authorities are looking at all possible solutions as its case numbers continue to rise in parts of England.

Public Health England has recorded 1,313 United Kingdom cases of the Indian variant. Doses are being sent to affected areas, and the possibility that certain groups could receive an early second dose is being considered.

The Department of Health and Social Care said there was "no firm evidence yet to show this variant has any greater impact on severity of disease or evades the vaccine".

Speaking at the Downing Street briefing alongside the UK's chief medical adviser Prof Chris Whitty, Mr Johnson said first Covid vaccine doses will also be prioritised "for anyone eligible who has not yet come forward", including the over-40s.

The Government is looking at ways to "flex" the rollout of vaccines in the worst hit areas such as the North West, including vaccinating everyone in multi-generational households from 18-year-olds to grandparents, Mr Zahawi said.
