"To date, approximately 1,750 rockets have been launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel, of which approximately 300 launches were unsuccessful, the rockets exploded in the Gaza Strip", the military said in a statement. The Wall Street Journal quotes Conricus as saying that "there are ground forces now deployed along the border area and they are engaging and attacking the Gaza Strip from there".

He spoke after consecutive nights of apparent revenge attacks by Arab and Jewish mobs in Lod, Jaffa, Haifa and elsewhere inside Israel.

As Israel and Hamas plunged closer to all-out war despite worldwide efforts at a cease-fire, communal violence in Israel erupted for a fourth night.

Palestinians marked the first day of the Eid al-Fitr religious holiday under relentless aerial bombardment.

"Even though we may not always agree about Israel's policies, we should be very clear that nothing, nothing justifies a terrorist organization firing rockets at our allies", says Rep. Josh Gottheimer.

Within hours, Israeli warplanes began bombing militant targets in Gaza, with the military saying that civilian casualties "cannot be ruled out" in the densely populated coastal territory.

So far 65 people have been reported killed in Gaza and seven in Israel, including one soldier. According to the enclave's health ministry, the number of Palestinians killed in three days has increased to 115, and 600 people were injured. Gaza militants have fired 1,800 rockets into Israel, including more than 400 that fell short or misfired, according to the military.

"We will continue to do what we're doing with great intensity", the politically embattled Israeli leader said.

Tom Fowdy, a British writer and analyst of politics and global relations with a primary focus on East Asia, believes that the U.S.'s acquiescence outraged the Palestinians while emboldening the Israelis to continue its settlement policy in East Jerusalem.

The joint mission lasted about 40 minutes and targeted a network of tunnels that an Israeli military spokesman said was used by Hamas militants.

Renewed rocket fire and rioting in mixed Jewish-Arab towns has fuelled growing fears that deadly violence between Israel and Palestinians could descend into full-scale war.

The army urged Israelis living in border towns up to four kilometres from Gaza to seek shelter until further notice.

At the same time, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, a fellow Palestinian militant group, have fired close to 2,000 rockets towards Israel. Hamas has also launched two drones that Israel said it quickly shot down.

Gaza's rockets are mostly repuroposed handmade weapons in comparison to Israel's millitary might which gets over $16 billion for defence spending and $3.8 billion from the United States annually for a 10-year period.

Israeli firefighters battle a field fire after a rocket launched from Gaza strip struck on May 13 in Ramla.

In another potential escalation, at least three rockets were fired from southern Lebanon toward Israel, an attack that threatened to open a new front in the fighting.

The current eruption of violence between Israelis and Palestinians began a month ago in contested Jerusalem.

Israel sees all of Jerusalem as its eternal and indivisible capital, while the Palestinians want the eastern section as a capital of a future state. In the Tel Aviv neighbourhood of Jaffa, an Israeli soldier was attacked by a group of Arabs and hospitalized in serious condition. He said police had clashed overnight with individuals in Lod and Tel Aviv who hurled rocks and firebombs at them.

The fighting deepened a political crisis that has sent Israel careening through four inconclusive elections in just two years.

The fighting erupted on Monday as rivals of Netanyahu, the country's longest-serving prime minister, were trying to form a government to unseat him. The decision to escalate early Friday with heavy aircraft, tank and artillery fire came at a uniquely sensitive time, as Israel grappled with the worst outbreak in years of violence between Arabs and Jews inside its borders.
