Ontario, Canada's most populous province, announced on Thursday to extend the provincewide stay-home-order against COVID-19 for two more weeks till early June. Premier Doug Ford says until teacher's union and medical experts can agree it is safe to reopen schools, students will remain at home, "We have some docs that are saying yes, but then we have the teacher's union that wants to potentially put an injunction against opening the schools".

Under the stay-at-home order, all non-essential businesses must remain closed and residents are required to remain indoors unless leaving their residence for an essential goal.

"We want to open and stay open", Dr. David Williams said. Today, I can say they're working.

During the media briefing, Ford continually returned to his requests to the federal government to enhance border measures, including reducing incoming global flights, implementing mandatory pre-departure PCR testing for all domestic air travellers entering Ontario, and addressing "the loophole" at Canada's worldwide land border by implementing a mandatory three-day hotel quarantine in federally designated hotels at the highest traffic crossings.

By the time Ford made the announcement, medicals officers in Toronto, Peel, and the Guelph Region had already ordered schools to close because of rising COVID-19 cases amid the third wave of the pandemic.

Ford did not provide any more detail about reopening small businesses but said details would be given before June. "So for the time being, we will need to continue with virtual learning". "It's just unfortunate that Doug Ford continues to play politics".

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) dubbed B.1.617 a "variant of interest" - a less urgent designation - last week. Surge testing is to start in Nottingham for two weeks after a rise in cases of the Indian variant of Covid .

Green party Leader Mike Schreiner also slammed Ford for being preoccupied with attacking the federal government on border issues, saying he should in stead be doing more to prevent the main source of outbreaks - workplaces.

"The premier is using the border to deflect from his own failures to. avoid, or at least mitigate, the third wave", he said.

Under the order, stores providing essential goods remain open but are only permitted to sell grocery and pharmacy items. Restaurants and gyms are closed for in-person service.

Ford also stressed that while he knows people are eager for some "sense of normalcy", COVID-19 variants of concern remain a risk to the province. "We simply don't have that right now".

Ontario reported 2,759 new cases of COVID-19 and additional 31 deaths on Thursday, the fourth day in which case numbers have fallen below the 3,000 mark. However, there are now 775 patients with COVID-related critical illness in adult and paediatric intensive care units (ICUs) with 37 new admissions.

With the extension of the Stay-at-Home order, all Ontario public schools will continue to operate under the remote-learning model.
