  • Joe Biden Embarks On 8 Day Europe Trip G7 To Be First Stop

During the administration of former President Donald Trump, Zelenskiy was in the spotlight because of a phone call in 2019 in which Trump pressured him to investigate Biden and his son Hunter's activities in Ukraine.

Biden plans to depart the White House on Wednesday morning en route to England as he begins the first overseas trip of his presidency, one that will include multiple meetings with allies and a highly anticipated summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin and Biden are to have a summit in Geneva on June 16, a meeting that comes amid soaring tensions in Russia-U.S. ties that have hit post-Cold War lows after Russia's 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, accusations of Moscow's interference in U.S. elections, hacking attacks and other issues. "And this week in Europe, we have the chance to prove it", he wrote.

Biden may face pressure to do more to share US vaccine supplies with other countries after an initial pledge of 20 million doses announced last week. G7 finance ministers agreed before the summit to pursue a global minimum tax rate of at least 15% and to allow market countries to tax up to 20% of the excess profits - above a 10% margin - generated by about 100 large, high-profit companies.

After three days of G7 summitry, Biden and his wife Jill will visit Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle.

That choreography - by far the most intense travel schedule since the 78-year-old took office - is created to send a clear message to Putin: Biden will represent a democratic bloc, not just the United States.

Biden will host NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House on Monday afternoon, prior to a June 14 meeting in Brussels between all 30 members of the military alliance, which was originally established to defend Western Europe against potential invasion from the Soviet Union. The agenda is expected to be dominated by Russia, China and the perennial issue of getting North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies to contribute more to the common defense.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Biden and the G7 leaders will announce an initiative to provide financing for physical, digital, and health infrastructure in the developing world.

The meetings are a build-up to his face-to-face meeting with Putin in Geneva on Wednesday.

No major breakthroughs are expected from the summit.

Biden will also press Putin about sabre-rattling on the Ukrainian border, the imprisonment of opponent Alexei Navalny, and his support for Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarussian strongman who forced a Ryanair airliner to land in Minsk, then arrested an opponent on the flight.

This time, the idea of a joint Biden-Putin press conference itself is up in the air.
