Patna district, where the capital is located, reported the highest number of deaths at 862, according to a statement posted on the government's Twitter account. The Patna High Court last month expressed concern about inconsistency in the death toll presented by government officials in separate affidavits, the Hindu newspaper reported. The latest addition of cases took the total caseload in the country to 2,90,89,069 while the death toll in the country rose up to 3,53,528 after the country reported 2,219 fatalities during the same span of time.

This is even as daily infections have been steadily showing a downward trend - with 94,052 fresh Covid infections reported in a day - less than one lakh for the third straight day. The number of recoveries in the country went up to 2,76,55,493, pushing the recovery rate to 94.77%.

The Ministry of Finance on Wednesday proposed carrying out round-the-clock Covid-19 vaccination to achieve herd immunity against the infection so that the country can regain its economic growth momentum.

It is to be noted, from the total recoveries of 2.75 crore, 1.62 lakh patients have recovered during the last 24 hours up to 8:00 am.
