AstraZeneca's antibody treatment fails to protect against COVID-19

  • AstraZeneca treatment unsuccessful at preventing symptomatic COVID-19

"There appears to be a small risk of [thrombosis with thrombocytopenia] in people 60 years and over, but this risk appears to be lower than in younger people", the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) said.

However, Australians who have already received AstraZeneca are being told to continue to get their second shot.

"Vaccinating general members of the population kicks off in full-scale in the third quarter", KDCA chief Jeong Eun-kyeong said, urging people to receive vaccines during their designated period to help the country achieve the goal of herd immunity by November.

The neutralizing antibodies in the people who received a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine increased sevenfold compared with those who received just one AstraZeneca dose, according to the study.

A total of 25.5 per cent of those eligible had had their first vaccination, including 64 per cent of over 70s.

The rate of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) after a second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine is significantly lower than after first doses, evidence from the United Kingdom has shown.

"For most people, they've been diagnosed early, there was a large proportion of those with a less severe form of this of this rare syndrome, and most of those have been discharged from hospital already".

Prof Kelly added in a statement that for people over 60, "the benefits of vaccination, with any vaccine including AstraZeneca, far outweigh the risks". Two out of three participants were administered the antibodies, and the remainder given a placebo. For those aged 60 to 69, it drops to 1.4 per 100,000 doses. There are now a total 37 confirmed and 23 probable cases of TTS in Australia.

On Thursday, the country reported 540 more virus cases, remaining in the 500s for the second day, the KDCA said. The first was a 48-year-old woman who died in April.

"On the basis of the information we have had in Australia, we have not had a single case of this particular syndrome in a second dose". AstraZeneca said it was now in talks with officials regarding the next step on that deal. "Scott Morrison didn't do the hard work past year and now our already-slow vaccine rollout will fall right off the rails", he said in a statement on Thursday.

Australia has only a few locally transmitted cases of Covid-19 and has closed its borders to all but a handful of foreign travellers.
