  • Green Party launches process that could eject Annamie Paul from leadership | CBC News

Annamie Paul is firing back against the coterie of party executives who sought to oust her as head of the Greens, calling them out for "racist" and "sexist" accusations as she seeks to defend her leadership and affirm her authority within a dividedparty.

The fallout from discord in Paul's party has continued apace, with two of the federal council's members resigning last night.

That vote did not end up taking place, multiple sources with knowledge of the meeting told CBC News.

Paul survived an emergency leadership meeting on Tuesday evening that could have kick-started the process of removing her from the leadership. If 75 per cent of council members agree at that meeting to let a leadership vote go forward, party members could then vote to remove Paul from office through a motion at an annual general meeting.

The motion says that if Paul does not comply with the motion, she'll face a vote of non-confidence on July 20.

"This does not bode well for the party ahead of the next potential federal campaign, during which both the Liberals and the New Democrats will do their best to sway environmentally conscious voters", he said.

Atwin and Paul have expressed differing views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which Atwin identified as a factor in her departure earlier this month. It also arrives less than a week after Jenica Atwin, one of three Green MPs, defected to the Liberals, citing the "distraction" of party turmoil over the latest Mideast crisis. "It is a totally inadequate statement", Atwin wrote. I stand with Palestine and condemn the unthinkable airstrikes in Gaza.

Green MP Paul Manly had said in a May 10 post the planned removal of Palestinian families from the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah "is ethnic cleansing".

Referring to their tweets, Zatzman said on Facebook: "We will work to defeat you".

He also said the nation must acknowledge the impact of gun violence on the LGBTQ community. Val Demings for a #PulseNationalMemorial passed the house & thank Sen".

Under the party's constitution, Paul had to be provided with the written case in favour of reviewing her leadership.

Only Zatzman responded. The former staffer didn't address the events of the last 24-hours. There are now three vacancies on the council, including the vice-president English position, recently held by John Kidder, Green MP Elizabeth May's husband, who stepped down unexpectedly, leaving his council position one year early.

Atwin has said that her exit was in large part due to a dispute over the party's stance on Israel.

In a media statement, May and Manly said they were "heartbroken" by Atwin's decision - and that Zatzman was to blame.

Lascaris questioned why Paul didn't reprimand Zatzman for attacking two Green MPs. The MPs added that, while they were frustrated, they have "no intention of leaving the Green Party of Canada".

It goes on to say Paul has attended few council meetings and "has displayed anger in long, repetitive, aggressive monologues and has failed to recognize the value of any ideas except her own".

Paul said that while the party supports cross-party co-operation and rejects excessive partisanship, she said there are "significant differences" between the Green and Liberal parties and called Atwin's floor-crossing a "disappointment".

The motion also calls on Paul to "explicitly support" the Green Party caucus.

She said she doesn't believe the internal squabbling over Israel was what pushed Atwin to switch sides. It could make it easier for the Liberals to hold Toronto-Centre where Paul is trying to win a seat in Parliament, and gain Atwin's New Brunswick riding if she can retain the seat as a Liberal.
