Dr Harries said: "Cases are rising rapidly across the country and the Delta variant is now dominant".

University of Calgary biologist and member of the "COVID-19 to Zero" advocacy group Gosia Gasperowicz says the exponential growth of this variant could potentially result in as many as 2,000 daily new cases in Alberta by early August.

The findings come days after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a month-long delay to an end to lockdown restrictions, citing the rising number of cases of the Delta variant first identified in India.

While just 26 people died more than two weeks after their second COVID-19 vaccine dose from the Delta variant, more than 30.6 million in the United Kingdom have had both jabs, according to the latest government figures. "Data show an increased risk of hospitalisation with Delta compared to Alpha, although PHE's analysis shows that two doses of vaccine gives a high degree of protection against hospitalisation, estimated to be more than 90 per cent", it said.

This is a rise of 173 cases since the last update on 14 June, with every health board in Wales reporting cases of the variant.

Of these, 527 were unvaccinated, and only 84 of the 806 had received both doses.

The highest prevalence was found in the North West at 0.26 per cent, up from 0.11 per cent in the previous round, while the South West had the lowest at 0.05 per cent, slightly down from 0.07 per cent.

"The increase is primarily in younger age groups, a large proportion of which were unvaccinated but are now being invited to receive the vaccine. Don't drop your guard practise "hands, face, space, fresh air" at all times", she added.

At the height of the first wave of the Covid pandemic last April, death rates were 1,859 per 100,000. This is equivalent to around 0.4 per cent cases becoming reinfected.

"However, it is important that we do not become complacent about this it is vital to have both doses of the vaccine and to follow the guidance at all times to reduce your chance of any infection", she said.

The REACT-1 study is an ongoing pandemic study, led by Imperial and carried out in partnership with Ipsos MORI, tracking current coronavirus infections in the community by testing randomly selected people each month over roughly a two-week period.
