  • The use of the Astra Zeneca vaccine for second doses is permitted in Saskatchewan

"Taking vaccines at a time when we are nearing complete vaccination when many developing countries are so far behind makes Canada a vaccine hoarder and leaves Canadians vulnerable to unsafe variants", said NDP health critic Don Davies.

Lawyers for the European Commission said that they won on "principle", while AstraZeneca highlighted that the court had dismissed E.U. demands over deliveries and acknowledged difficulties the company faced in an "unprecedented situation".

"If you had Moderna or Pfizer for your first dose, you can safely take either Moderna or Pfizer for your second dose for strong protection".

Ontario continues to urge its citizens to get vaccinated as soon as they can and to book a second dose as soon as eligible.

From the beginning, the Commission has claimed that it launched the emergency legal procedure, which started at the Brussels Court of First Instance last month, simply to secure the vaccine doses that European Union member countries were promised.

But Douglas Weeks, who received his second AstraZeneca shot on June 5, isn't concerned. The panel has previously said mRNA vaccines, such as the ones produced by Pfizer Inc.in partnership with BioNTech SE, as well as Moderna Inc., are preferable to viral vector vaccines, such as those developed by AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson.

"A lot of people are really stressed out about having to make the decision", said Violo, who was unsure if her pharmacy should still carry the vaccine moving forward.

But AstraZeneca argued that the challenges of producing and delivering the vaccine could not have been foreseen during a once-in-a-century pandemic, and that its United Kingdom sites were primarily meant to be used to service its contract with the British government. "And I think people are legitimately confused and frustrated over the constant changes of guidance around the vaccine".

The premier received his first shot of AstraZeneca in the middle of April, as health officials were in the process of reviewing the vaccine's link to very rare blood clots, and offered a similar message encouraging people to join B.C.'s immunization effort at the earliest opportunity. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Friday's ruling supported the EU's view that AstraZeneca had failed to meet its commitments.

NACI also updated its previous recommendation that people at high risk of exposure to, or serious illness from, COVID-19, could opt to get AstraZeneca rather than waiting for Pfizer or Moderna.

As Europe battled the COVID-19 pandemic and looked to AstraZeneca for a much-needed vaccine, officials there took an unusual step earlier this year of suing the company over supply shortcomings.

The province reported 345 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday and one death linked to the virus. The Ministry of Health said there were 378 people in hospital with the novel coronavirus - 352 in intensive care.
