  • Champ The White House Dog Has Died

Champ was a fixture at both the vice president's residence at the Naval Observatory and now the White House.

Champ Biden, US President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden's beloved German Shepard, has died at the age of 13. Biden got Champ in 2008, the year he was elected vice president under President Barack Obama.

In their statement, the Bidens said that when Champ was young "he was happiest chasing golf balls on the front lawn of the Naval Observatory", and that more recently he enjoyed "joining us as a comforting presence in meetings or sunning himself in the White House garden".

In 2018, Champ was joined by Major, another German shepherd, whom the Bidens adopted from the Delaware Humane Association.

Previously they said, he loved racing to catch their grandchildren as they ran around their backyard in DE, and chasing golf balls on the front lawn of the Naval Observatory.

Major was fostered by the Bidens in March 2018 from the Delaware Humane Society - the USA equivalent of the RSPCA. There had been no reports of bad behavior from the older Champ.

Major returned to the White House in April after being sent to an off-site training so he could adjust to life in the White House.

Delhi defies social distancing norms, doctors say brace for Covid-19 ‘explosion’
With the new cases, the country's tally has climbed to 29,700,313 while the death toll has reached 3,81,903. Recoveries continue to outnumber daily new cases for the 35th consecutive day.

But it is not the first time that Major has caused trouble for the President.

In November, Mr Biden fractured his foot while playing with the lively canine in DE and had to wear a walking boot for a number of weeks.

"They have to take the elevator, they're not used to that, and they have to go out on the South Lawn with lots of people watching them".

It is unclear if the Bidens will get a second dog to keep Major company. "She is waiting in the wings", Jill Biden said in April.

Joe shared the same statement on his Twitter account, and captioned the post: "Our family lost our loving companion Champ today".

The Bidens had prepared Champ for a life in the spotlight, enlisting a DE trainer, Mark Tobin, to teach him how to handle the plane rides, noises and crowds that a then-second dog might encounter.

"We love our sweet, good boy and will miss him always", the President and first lady said.
