  • Tropical Storm Claudette makes landfall over Gulf Coast, brings heavy rains

Strong southerly winds will cause minor water level rises late Sunday through Monday morning for areas south of Cape Hatteras. The Alabama News Network reported that 15 to 20 people were injured.

A 24-year-old man and a 3-year-old boy were killed Saturday when a tree fell on their house just outside the Tuscaloosa city limits, Capt. Marty Sellers of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit told The Tuscaloosa News.

Village Creek in nearby Ensley rose above flood stage to 13 feet (4 meters), the National Weather Service in Birmingham tweeted, AP reported.

The rapidly changing conditions came as Claudette was beginning to batter parts of Georgia and the Carolinas early Sunday.

"A turn toward the east-northeast is expected tonight and Sunday", NHC forecaster Jack Beven said.

Tropical storm Claudette which formed in the Atlantic, producing heavy rainfall, has weakened to a tropical depression on Saturday evening, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

In Alabama's Escambia County, a tornado triggered by Claudette ripped apart at least 50 mobile homes, according to Gov. Kay Ivey.

Straight-line wind gusts reached 60 mph in parts of coastal MS, but the storm's most destructive element proved to be a tornado it spawned in Brewton, Ala., about 60 miles east-northeast of Mobile, near the Florida Panhandle.

"It kind of affected everybody", Jackson said.

The victims were also not immediately identified, but their deaths took place as ran downpoured on northern Alabama and Georgia in the latter part of Saturday.

The damage caused by the storm was also felt in northern Florida, where winds (sometimes reaching 85 miles per hour (137 kph)) rolled over 18-wheeled vehicles.

The storm also dumped flooding rains north of Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana and along the MS coast, inundating streets and, in some areas, pushing water into homes. Later, the storm was drenching the Florida Panhandle and, well inland, a broad expanse of Alabama.

However, it's expected to become a tropical storm again when it moves across the Carolinas on Sunday night or into early Monday, according to National Hurricane Center forecasters.

Separately, the tropical cyclone Dolores landed on the west coast of Mexico with forces close to a hurricane. As of Saturday night, it was a depression located about 140 miles (225 kilometers) northwest of Guadalajara, Mexico. Its remnants had maximum sustained winds of 25 mph (35 kph), and it was centered about 170 miles (275 kilometers) east of Mazatlan, Mexico.

Flooding had already begun on Friday night, with local media reporting high water over roads, stranded vehicles and water rescues; flood warnings and watches were in effect in addition to a widespread tropical storm warning.
