  • Canada announces limited first phase of border reopening

Fully vaccinated people will be allowed to enter Canada with fewer restrictions starting July 5, according to the CBC.

On Friday, Canada extended the restrictions until at least July 21, though it's expected to announce the easing of some rules Monday for fully vaccinated citizens.

The easing also does not apply to foreign nationals, unless they are already exempted by the border restrictions. "If you are planning to travel internationally this summer, do not forget to check the requirements of the country that you're visiting".

Travellers will be required to electronically submit proof of their vaccination into the ArriveCAN app prior to their arrival in Canada.

"Each month that travel from Canada remains at a standstill, the USA economy loses $1.5 billion in potential travel exports, which is enough to support 10,000 American jobs and each week the US loses $340 million", Barnes said.

Even so, Canadians and permanent residents who are fully vaccinated won't be able to simply walk through customs.

The federal government has laid out its plan to roll back some of its COVID-19 measures, and though it lists some loosening of quarantine requirements for people who've received a full course of a vaccine, it doesn't guarantee anything.

There are no changes to the border restrictions for travellers who are not fully vaccinated.

If they are approved, travellers will not have to quarantine or take a COVID-19 test on day eight.

If a fully vaccinated traveller does test positive they will be required to follow local public health guidance and quarantine requirements.

Those arriving by air are required to quarantine for three nights in a government-authorized hotel in addition to the rest of the testing and quarantine requirements. In this situation, federal officials said that the parents will be able to leave the house during their children's isolation. This must be done before the traveller arrives at the Canadian border.

As well, vaccinated travellers won't be subjected to the controversial three-day mandatory hotel quarantine - a program derided by many experts as a needless and ineffective measure to halt COVID-19 infections from entering Canada via worldwide travel.

At this time, global flights will still only be allowed to land at four designated airports: Montréal-Trudeau worldwide Airport, Toronto Pearson global Airport, Calgary global Airport, and Vancouver worldwide Airport.

Airlines, tour operators and other businesses on both sides of the border have been pleading for a more comprehensive reopening plan, with the vital summer season about to begin, and Canada's go-slow approach is causing frustration. The CDC advises travelers to be fully vaccinated before traveling to Mexico.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is now in self-isolation following his recent trip to Europe for the G7 Summit and other high-level meetings with world leaders.

Blair said Monday that while the border restrictions-introduced 15 months ago early in the COVID-19 pandemic-were never going to be permanent, a higher rate of vaccinations both in Canada and overseas will be needed before throwing out all worldwide travel limits is safe.
