The ranch is home to "Alabama's needy, neglected, or abused, school-aged children", according to its website. Two people died in separate vehicle, Garlock told local news outlets _ 29-year-old Cody Fox and 9-month-old Ariana Fox, both of Marion County, Tennessee.

It headed away from Alabama after shattering rainfall records in several cities and being blamed for an additional two deaths after a tree fell on a rain-drenched home outside Tuscaloosa on Saturday, local media reported.

At the end of Saturday, it rained in northern Alabama and Georgia, killing them.

Claudette continued to produce heavy rains and the threat of flash floods across much of the Southeast, the report said.

Flash flood watches were posted Sunday for northern Georgia, most of SC, the North Carolina coast, parts of southeast Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

The tropical storm warning came into effect in Duck Town, North Carolina from Little River Bay to the Bund. Forecasts have issued tropical cyclone surveillance in the Little River Inlet on the South Santee River, South Carolina.

Butler County Coroner Wayne Garlock has said the children's ages ranged from nine months to 17 years old. The van caught fire after the wreck. The driver of the bus with the girls, ranch director Candice Gulley, was pulled from the wreckage but the children could not be saved. Her condition wasn't immediately available. At least one of the dead was Garry's child, Smith said.

Smith visited the crash site Saturday and said it was unlike anything he'd ever seen.

"We lost eight young people that can make a difference in our world, we lost eight young people that didn't have a chance to have their own children, we lost eight young people that can't break the cycle of where they've been and change it for their children", Smith said.

Garlock said the location of the wreck is "notorious" for hydroplaning, as the northbound highway curves down a hill to a small creek. Traffic on that stretch of I-65 is usually filled with vacationers driving to and from Gulf of Mexico beaches on summer weekends.

Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond said the accident involved a total of 18 vehicles and that up to five other people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

"They were on their way back from the beach", Mr. Smith stated in an interview on Sunday.

Garry, the only survivor from Van, has been working with children for many years since she and her husband were parents of the house for seven years on the ranch.

"During that time, 74 girls went through our house and called us moms and dads", she told Opelika-Auburn News in August 2019.

Top winds from Claudette remained near 30 miles per hour (45 kph) on Sunday. National Hurricane Center forecasters predicted that a tropical cyclone would return to eastern North Carolina on Monday before heading to the Atlantic Ocean.

The center of Claudette's disorganized circulation was located about 15 miles (20 kilometers) east-northeast of Atlanta on Sunday morning.

Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson said a suspected tornado "almost razed" a mobile home park, knocked trees on the house, and opened the roof of the high school gymnasium. Most of the damage occurred in or near the towns of Bruton and East Bruton, about 48 miles (77 kilometers) north of Pensacola, Florida.

"It affected everyone", Jackson said. "However, because these mobile homes are built so close together, the damage to them may be much greater than scattered homes".

Tornadoes were also reported in southwestern Georgia.

The storm also rained floods north of Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, and along the MS coast, flooding the streets and, in some areas, pushing water into homes.

According to forecasters, the system can rain 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters) in the area and can store 8 inches (20 centimeters) in isolation.

Separately, Tropical Storm Dolores made landfall on Mexico's west coast with near-hurricane force. As of Sunday morning, it had dissipated over Mexico.
